Mad 4 Mini's
Five years ago five little girls began making miniatures one Saturday morning every month around their sponsor Carol Tierce's dining room table. Five children soon grew to eight, and then to twelve. Mad 4 Minis (ages 10 - 15) now has eleven members, as one child moved out-of-state. The girls' skills have advanced with their age as evidenced in Salado in September when several of the girls were old enough to join SAM and take classes. In order to attend, two of the children took advantage of two $250 scholarships which had been donated for miniatures in Karen Sechler's name.
A trip to San Antonio to visit the Mexican Market in August was the kick-off to Mad 4 Minis 2008-2009 project. The search for tiny colorful blankets, baskets, and pottery in the market before enjoying lunch at a Mexican restaurant gave the children a mental picture of the project that they were about to begin. What a great time the girls are having now making plaid ribbon shopping bags, flower head wreaths, and fluffy tissue flowers! Wee Shop kits (donated by Corpus Chrisit's SAM Birthday Party 2004) will be used as the structure, display shelf kits (donated by San Antonio's SAM Birthday Party 2002), and eleven donated chairs are just some of the items Mad 4 Minis thanks SAM and its members for!
Five years invested in sharing miniatures with children is a rewarding experience. Consider helping our wonderful hobby grow by sponsoring a group of children in your town. As with all worthwhile volunteer time, you will receive more than you give.
